Credit Union

SEECAT churches are very aware of the many people in their communities with financial problems. It is clear that debt is part of these problems in many instances, where budgets are tight and major expenses cannot be met except by borrowing, often at punitive interest rates. Credit Unions are not-for-profit organisations which encourage regular saving and offer loans at reasonable rates to their members.

For several years we were pleased to support Castle Credit Union (formerly Craigmillar Credit Union), and we offered a local information and collection point manned by volunteers from our churches. Castle Credit Union merged with the North Edinburgh Credit Union in late 2015, and now trades as Castle Community Bank. It offers an on-line service to anyone who lives or works in the EH postcode area – full details on the website.

SEECAT hopes that this new organisation will prove an asset to those in our communities who have difficulty accessing affordable finance. If so, we would hope eventually to offer a local information point again, this time including computer facilities to provide easy access. Some of our volunteers have meantime been much involved in the transitional period when the new on-line system was being developed.
